These program requirements are for students who enroll in the 2024-2025 academic year.


The Master of Arts in Teaching at University of Maryland Global Campus can prepare you to leverage innovative educational technology and meet the needs of diverse learners in a wide range of secondary school environments. This program is designed for students with a bachelor's degree who want to earn Maryland teaching certification in secondary education in subject areas including English, history, social studies, biology, chemistry, earth/space science, physics, mathematics, computer science, Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin Chinese. If you are interested in teaching in a state other than Maryland, please see that state's department of education for certification requirements.

Program Highlights
Required Courses

Each core and capstone course in the program includes in-person field experiences. In addition, the program culminates in a full-time, on-site teaching internship of at least 80 in-school days (approximately 18 calendar weeks), which you complete under the supervision of a mentor teacher who is certified in your content area and a university supervisor.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must provide an official transcript(s) in its original sealed envelope(s) demonstrating all of the following:

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Completion of a major in the content area for which certification will be sought (alternatively, and subject to UMGC approval, you can complete 30 credits in content-related courses)**
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher in content area coursework

All applicants must also provide proof of qualifying test scores on the , or alternatively a qualifying composite score on the Praxis I, SAT®1, ACT, or GRE. Titles and qualifying scores for these exams can be found at the .

  • Applicants looking to teach computer science who possess a degree or coursework older than five years must also take the Praxis II content exam for computer science (5652) and submit a qualifying test score (149) to apply to the MAT program, in addition to submitting a qualifying test score on any one of the Maryland basic skills tests.
  • **Foreign language applicants may be admitted without having a major or 30 credits in the particular language they wish to teach, but they must submit scores of Advanced Low on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Written Proficiency Test (WPT) for the language as well as show a overall cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher in their bachelor's degree and a qualifying score on any one of the Maryland basic skills tests.

Once we receive your application, transcripts, and test scores, we will notify you if you meet the admission criteria.

You must include official transcripts from your undergraduate degree-granting institution and any additional official transcripts from any graduate courses taken or graduate programs completed. The transcripts must be in their original sealed envelopes.

Although UMGC's Education Department makes the final determination regarding admission, you are encouraged to perform a self-assessment of your transcript. Use the following forms to help you analyze your transcripts and review the required standards for your preferred teaching specialty.

Computer Science Applicants

Applicants looking to teach computer science who possess a degree or coursework older than five years must take the Praxis II content exam for computer science () and submit a qualifying test score () to apply to the MAT program, in addition to submitting a qualifying test score on any one of the (see item #4).

Learn advanced skills in curriculum development and instruction, technology integration, and leadership in pre-K through grade 12 education with an online master’s degree in instructional technology from University of Maryland Global Campus. The Master of Education in instructional technology is designed for students with professional experience teaching in P–12 schools. If you lack teaching experience, you may want to choose another UMGC education-related graduate program. Strong writing skills are also encouraged in this program.
