We all need a little assistance at times. If you鈥檙e like most students, you probably find certain subjects more challenging than others. If you鈥檙e struggling in a class, you may be wondering whether tutoring is available at your college or university鈥攁nd, if it is, whether it鈥檚 what you need to succeed.
The good news is that many colleges and universities, including online schools, offer tutoring. In many cases, including at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), online tutoring gives you the opportunity to engage one-on-one with a trained, knowledgeable educator from wherever you are, on a schedule that works for you.
What is online college tutoring?
Online tutoring for college is not just about giving you information. Rather, it鈥檚 about helping you gain a better understanding of both your course expectations and the underlying skills you need to succeed鈥攊n the classroom and beyond.
Velma Hart took advantage of the online tutoring offered at t 黑料社区 and earned her bachelor's degree in human resource management in 2018 and her MBA in 2020.
"I needed tutoring for a particular course, and it went very, very well," said Hart. "I realized about halfway through that it was my thinking that was the barrier. By working with my tutor, I developed enough tools to get me through that course."
A successful tutoring experience will require work on your part. You won鈥檛 be given the answers or have your work 鈥渇ixed鈥 for you. Instead, you鈥檒l be given the tools to improve your work yourself鈥攌nowledge and skills that apply, not only to the coursework, but also to the rest of your academic career. What kinds of tutoring services does UMGC offer students?聽
Individualized tutoring is available to all students for an ever-growing list of subjects, such as writing, math, statistics, reading comprehension, English language learning, and more. The latest addition is AI literacy tutoring to help you learn how to build effective prompts and evaluate AI-generated output for specific purposes. At t 黑料社区, we鈥檙e committed to your academic success, so we offer three types of online tutoring for undergraduates and graduates鈥攁t no cost to you. These are:
- One-on-one subject tutoring聽
- English language learning
- Effective Writing Center
As a UMGC student, you automatically have an account with Tutor.com, where you can get focused, one-on-one assistance with your coursework based on your questions and concerns. Each month, you can access up to ten hours of online tutoring.
Your tutor will carefully assess where you stand with regard to the expectations of the assignment and then help you develop a plan for moving forward. You鈥檒l leave each tutoring session knowing, not only where you can best improve, but also where you鈥檙e already excelling, so you can build on your success.
Whether or not English is your first language, at t 黑料社区 you can connect with an English language learning (ELL) specialist to help you improve your English language skills for academic and professional purposes.听
In addition, every student at t 黑料社区 can receive writing assistance, regardless of course or level, through UMGC鈥檚 Effective Writing Center. At t 黑料社区, we know that effective writing is critical to your academic and career success and requires continuous improvement.听
How can I access online tutoring at t 黑料社区?
Tutoring is accessed through the 鈥淭utoring鈥 tab, under 鈥淎cademic Support鈥 (or under 鈥淩esources鈥), in the online classroom, or through the 鈥淪tudent Support鈥 option in the student portal (MyUMGC). When you select 鈥淭utoring,鈥 you鈥檒l be taken to the Tutor.com landing page鈥攜our single access point for no-cost, UMGC-endorsed tutoring for college students. One-on-one subject tutoring is available online in two ways: You can meet with a tutor immediately by choosing the "Connect Now" option, or you can schedule a time to meet with a tutor. With either option, you鈥檒l receive live, online instruction for up to one hour at a time.
How can I access writing assistance?
If you鈥檙e an English language learner, you can indicate that when submitting your work so that your get specialized feedback to help you develop your English writing skills.听
Writing assistance is available at the Effective Writing Center鈥檚 website, where you鈥檒l find guides and resources related to common writing tasks and concerns. You can schedule a time to meet online with a writing advisor, submit your written work to an advisor, or get an AI review. You can avail yourself of this service any time 24/7 or at any stage of your writing process, from questions about how to get started to polishing a final draft.听
When you submit written work for review, within 12 hours you鈥檒l receive two documents in return: a copy of your work with the tutor鈥檚 notes and suggestions, and a summary with additional resources to help you improve further.
