About Internships

There are several different types of internships including paid, unpaid/volunteer, and cooperative education (also known as co-op or for-credit). Employers determine whether or not they are able to pay their interns; however, they must abide by the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act.聽 More information about these standards can be on the聽.

For-Credit Internships

Undergraduate UMGC students may be eligible to obtain credit for internships. These opportunities are often called cooperative education, or co-ops, and can also be referred to as internships, externships, and temporary or part-time jobs.聽 聽

Career Services does not oversee for-credit internships or co-ops. These are coordinated by the Workplace Learning Program.聽To determine if you are eligible for a co-op, review the application process and deadlines in聽Workplace Learning. Although many co-op or Workplace Learning internships are unpaid, students are eligible to receive compensation when completing these experiences.
