Student and alumni entrepreneurs pitched business ideas for seed funding
On April 10, 2026, University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC)聽hosted its聽first聽,聽where聽10聽U.S.-based聽students聽and recent alumni聽pitched business ideas for seed funding聽in technology and non-technology tracks. More than聽100聽people registered to watch and visit finalists' virtual booths.聽聽
Awards聽were sponsored by the University System of聽Maryland鈥檚聽聽and the event was organized under UMGC鈥檚 Digital Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Hub (DEEHub). The聽DEEHub聽is led by the School of Business, in collaboration with the School of Integrative and Professional Studies and聽School聽of Cybersecurity and Information Technology.聽
Judges,聽mentors聽and support behind the pitches
鈥淭he聽DEEHub聽brings together faculty, students, alumni, and industry partners to support innovation and entrepreneurship at t 黑料社区,鈥 said MBA聽Portfolio聽Director聽Camelia Fawzy, MBA聽鈥06, DM聽鈥15,聽the main organizer of the competition.
Entrepreneurial concepts聽ranged聽from cybersecurity and artificial intelligence-backed applications, to empowering new mothers, to custom craft furniture. Participants shared a common mission of resolving needs they have聽observed.聽
Adjunct Associate Professor Andrew Seely,聽鈥99,聽who teaches computer science at t 黑料社区, was one of the judges for the technology track. When asked about his role as a聽judge聽for the competition, Seely,聽who had some of the most聽specific聽questions for the competitors,聽reflected聽on his own earlier days as a tinkerer.
鈥淚 was writing applications and software,鈥 he said. 鈥淚n hindsight, if only I had some sort of mentorship, I could have done聽bigger聽things.鈥
Mentoring was a critical aspect of the competition. Eight mentors鈥攊ncluding six UMGC alumni鈥攚ere available throughout the process to advise contestants. Three of the six judges were also UMGC alums.
Winners announced as pilot competition concludes
Discussing the winner of the technology group鈥, a military simulator created by master's project management student Laznier聽Mederos Santos鈥擲eely pointed聽to聽the idea鈥檚聽potential for positive impact.聽
鈥淗e聽wasn't聽solving a problem for himself. He had already solved his problem,鈥 Seely said. 鈥淗e just saw a gap聽that requires solutions.聽That's聽why聽I felt聽it聽bubbled to the top.鈥
Rooster is a portable, AI-based, and voice-driven command and control training simulator for U.S. Air Force battle management. The聽overarching focus is聽to increase access to affordable training, thus increasing the聽number of proficient operators.聽
The non-technology track winner was聽, a聽nonprofit enterprise聽founded by MBA聽student聽Shaquita Stewart to empower mothers聽by expanding聽access to focused education, smart support, and caring communities. Initially inspired by聽Stewart鈥檚聽personal聽experience with聽gaps in maternal care, MOMINATE has six trained labor advocates and can support dozens of mothers.
Both winners聽received聽$1,500聽at聽an announcement ceremony聽at the conclusion of the event.聽Runners up聽in each category聽received聽$1,250, and a community choice recipient in both tracks received $250.

With a successful pilot event in the books, plans聽are underway聽for another UMGC pitch competition.聽Students interested in learning more about entrepreneurship are invited to join the聽Entrepreneurship Club聽or explore聽business and management programs聽offered by the university.聽
